¡Me enganché!

¿Cuánto tiempo dedicaste a este trabajo?

Probablemente a tiempo parcial, unos tres años

First of all, congratulations for your book about Pedro De Heredia, “Book of Lessons”

Thanks :)

When did you discover HEMA?

In the early 2000s, but I was unable to start proper in a club until 2008

Which is the fencing style do you study and why?

At the club where I started they studied a form of Italian rapier and also Bolognese sidesword. I continue this, though my interests have diversified into French styles and vulgar destreza

I think, nowadays, you are an important social media HEMA influencer, what do you think about that?

Hahaha, that's news to me! I dont think I am really. If I am an influencer, I hope it's to make people appreciate what we study, that we are all students and that we should try to share and play nice.

You usually teach in many event around the world each year, could you point pros and contras about that?

I actually feel I don’t get to enough events! The pro is that it shows I am very lucky and have the opportunity to meet people and make friends; to share what I know while also learning from different people. There are cons of course, I guess mainly the post event blues. Most of my friends live outside England and I miss them.

Focus in the book:

Why Pedro De Heredia? Please, not answer Why not? I know that you learn fast, but I am the galician not you… xDDD

Dammit! Okay... well I saw the fabulous pictures in Sydney Anglo's book 'The Martial Arts of Renaissace Europe'. I obtained a scan of the text which, being in French, was something I could read and translate. The book has many different principles and techniques and is very detailed. I was hooked!

How much time do you dedicate to this work?

Probably part time over three years

This book has 71 color images! How do you manage it?

Well, I know a Swede! My friend, Hans Jornlind lives in Stockholm; the images are in the Swedish Royal Library. He walked right in and asked permission!

Do you think that is important for any fencer to read treatises, even when they have a good en experienced instructor in his club?

I think it depends on what that individual feels is fencing. If they want to just use a simulator to spar or win competitions, then no. And we should not force people. However, if they want to understand the sword (or anything) as a weapon, as a

martial form then yes. Martial arts requires knowledge and treatises are the most prominent form of knowledge we have. There are no short cuts in gaining understanding; we only acquire this through experience and knowledge. To reject a form of knowledge would be a form of intellectual self-harm.

To end, a piece of advice for someone who is starting to translate a treatise?

The author is trying to speak to you, they want you to learn. But do not assume you know them or the full extent of their intentions. Even with research, we cannot claim to know the author or their viewpoint. In sum, don't make the assumption that you pick up a treatise and rip out the knowledge. Take your time and enjoy the conversation.
